Meet Genevieve.

Genevieve* called Atwell Centre in Hamilton desperately searching for pregnancy options support within her region, but there was nothing. Atwell Hamilton was the closest service to her but it would take her almost 2 hours by bus to get there.

Unlike many others in her area who find themselves in this predicament, Genevieve was so desperate to talk to someone that she booked an appointment with one of our nurses and made the long journey by bus to Hamilton.

Our confidential and free support enabled her to get real-time information about her unborn fetus before her family doctor was able to see her. She appreciated the confidential space, professional staff, and the point-of-care ultrasound that gave her a unique look at the fetus growing inside of her.

After one previous abortion, Genevieve just didnt know if she could do it again. She still cries and feels guilty to this day about her choices but didnt know if she would be supported in her current situation.

To her surprise, Genevieve was further along in her pregnancy than she originally thought. If she were to proceed with an abortion, it would have to be surgical, and this was not an option for her. Adoption was also out of question, so in that moment, Genevieve chose to parent.

Many clients like Genevieve in the Halton region do not have the courage to bus all the way to Hamilton or Toronto to learn about their options and make an informed choice.

The Problem

Every year, thousands of women in the Halton region face unexpected pregnancies. These unexpected pregnancies can cause fear and uncertainty about the future as couples or individuals ask themselves Am I ready for a child? Uncertainty often ends in a decision made from fear, resulting in abortion. Our goal is to be a safe place that women and men can turn to when they face an unexpected pregnancya place where they can go to be accurately informed and educated and be shown compassion, love, and support.

Clients in Halton region looking for options regarding an unexpected pregnancy are searching for helpwith none available. In the Halton region, the closest pregnancy care centre is in Mississauga, which is too far for some individuals to access. When Atwell first began in 2012, creating a location in Halton was always the goalthe need was just as apparent as it was in Hamilton. We started the Atwell Centre in Hamilton because of the need within the community, especially due to the major college and university. Now, we want to further our reach to help men and women facing an unexpected event to service Halton and its college communities, such as Sheridan College in Oakville.

The Solution

Atwell wants to create a satellite location in the Halton region along the boarder of Burlington and Oakville.

At the Atwell Centre, we see many women and men who are facing an unexpected event in their life. It could be a pregnancy they werent expecting, or even finding out that their partner has contracted a sexually transmitted illness (STI). All these situations can cause panic within a persons life; we are here to relieve that panic. We believe that through education and proper support these events can feel more manageable for the clients that walk through our door. That is why we started the Atwell Centre and why we have continued to increase our services to now include pregnancy test and options, point of care ultrasounds, and STI testing and treatment, as well as our SHARE and PAS education programs. Atwells services and programs will allow us to fill the need within the Halton community and help those in crisis. But we rely solely on the generosity of our donors so we can continue the important work that we do.
