Bring back Youth Programs!

Campaign by Urban Tilth

Richmond's kids deserve a connection to nature and space to grow into their strongest selves but we can't continue to provide this space without your help.

Urban Tilth inspires, hires, and trains local residents to cultivate agriculture, feed our community, and restore relationships to land to build a more sustainable food system, within a just and healthier community. We operate 7 school and community gardens and a farm, 2 CSAs and 3 farm stands.

Story

In Richmond, the North Richmond Farm stands out as a unique green oasis. Every week dozens of Richmond kids walk through the gates of our farm in North Richmond to attend “After School at the Farm”. Here they have the space to get dirty and learn about composting with worms, saving seeds, tending chickens, as well as the time to hang out with other kids, our staff mentors and their parents as well as be introduced to and enjoy delicious farm fresh foods.

At Urban Tilth we believe that creating these kinds of experiences is how we begin to restore our communities’ relationship with the land and with each other.

Kids roam our farm but they are cared for and educated by the dedicated staff of Urban Tilth many of whom were born and raised in Richmond. One parent, Yokari, brings her daughter and nephew to our program on Wednesday. Amongst the chickens, the mud kitchen, and the scavenger hunts, she told us: "The knowledge we get here, we actually take home and implement." Her daughter now spots edible plants growing around Richmond and is excited to come home to eat fresh healthy foods with her family.

Why Your Support Matters Now

This year, Urban Tilth, like many community organizations, is facing severe cuts to funding sources that once reliably covered programs like this one. These cuts mean that free youth programs like “Afterschool at the Farm” are in danger.
