Hello! Our Sailing Team has been competing since 2006, just three years after the University began offering programs. We are the longest-operating club sport at CSUCI and still compete as a COED sport in the Pacific Coast College Sailing Conference (PCCSC) against many of the top sailing programs in the Nation like Stanford, Cal Berkeley, UCLA, and U of Hawaii. Many Collegiate Sailing programs are clubs like us but we compete at the Varsity level against very large schools with well-funded programs.
We continue to practice out of the excellent facilities of the Channel Island Boating Center (CIBC) in Oxnard. As a sports club, we are student organized and led. We have volunteer coaches that help contribute to our success and University advisors that help us navigate the many administrative complexities of running a competitive team that travels to competitions and manages a budget to meet the expectations and goals of the team. Our current roster is largely compiled of members who had no sailing experience prior to college. Our team is a diverse group and is open to all students. We do not charge dues to allow everyone an opportunity to join and participate.
The 2022-2023 Scholastic year has been a particularly challenging one. While we were able to compete during the fall semester, an issue with establishing insurance coverage kept us from competing for most of the spring. Very frustrating as coming out of the pandemic we were expecting smooth sailing with regards to our ability to compete. The team as always is attempting to rebuild and grow in roster size and competitive level.
We currently have 7 boats in the program (Club Flying Juniors, (CFJs)) and these of course require constant maintenance and replacement of parts. We also recently acquired 3 Lasers through generous donations, but these require some upgrades or complete rigging and new sails to be class legal. This brings us to a total of 4 Lasers. We especially desire to acquire Radial rigs for the womens single-handed class. While the University provides us with a budget that permits us to operate and compete on a limited basis, we must fundraise to help reach our goals of expanding and improving our program. Anything you may be able to donate to assist our club would be greatly appreciated! We thank you for taking the time to read our story & we look forward to interacting with you at our Alumni & friends day!
CSUCI Sailing Club is working on the following needs and objectives:
1. Grow our roster while maintaining/increasing our diversity and opportunity for those new to sailing
2. Increase team participation in the PCCSC by competing in womens regattas, keel boat regattas, single-handed events, and increasing coed team events. Increasing participation by JV teams
3. Grow competitively and represent CSUCI in interconference regattas
4. Increase our fleet of CFJs from 7 to 9 boats
5. Upgrade our newly acquired Lasers with new standard and radial rigs and sails for both mens and womens sailors
6. Increase inventory of racing sails
7. Obtain a trailer capable to transport 3+ CFJs
8. Obtain an additional dolly for CFJ transport
9. Grow informal and formal relationships with local Yacht Clubs so we can participate in local racing outside of the College program; increase awareness of the Sail Club for potential CSUCI students who sail; and develop infrastructure for CSUCI to host future Collegiate regatta events.
What could help the CSUCI sailing club:
1. Cash or check donations. These are tax deductible and receipts can be provided upon request.
2. Boat donations of Lasers and CFJs including usable sailing gear (e.g. sails, hardware, line, rudders, tillers, standing rigging etc.)
3. Donations of usable personal sailing gear (e.g. sailing gloves, booties, wet suits, dry suits, foul weather gear)
Cash Donations will be able to cover the following:
Travel and competition costs:
A typical in-state regatta costs over $900 in travel costs for hotel rooms, fuel for a tow vehicle, and entrance fees. Travel to regattas outside of California requires airfare and ground transportation. Race fees are typically less than $100. Leasing of boats for races when towing is not an option is typically around $100.
New boats:
CFJ costs approximately $8000
Laser is approximately $6000
Estimated cost per Laser for upgrades desired $3000
