Evie’s mother, Erin, knew that children with Down Syndrome are at a higher risk of developing leukemia. While she initially thought a low-grade fever and persistent pain in her daughter’s legs might have been COVID, OCH’s initial diagnosis in 2020 confirmed it was her worst fears - leukemia.
Evie was immediately sent to OCH to begin treatment, then faced a relapse in the summer of 2023 and a bone marrow transplant this past fall – a difficult process that included some scary side effects.
Every time that would happen, nurses would rush in within seconds, sweep in and take care of everything,” Erin says, “and reassure me that this was expected, these are things that happen. The nurses were pretty spectacular.”
