Story

Computing has the power to transform lives and shape society for the better. With your support, IEEE Computer Society initiatives reach underrepresented groups, spark lifelong interest, and foster a sense of belonging in the computing community. Together, we are cultivating a future where everyone has the opportunity to learn, innovate, and make meaningful contributions to our world.

For 2025, the Computer Society funded five exciting projects:

TechAble– Comprehensive digital skills training and mentorship program for 40 students with disabilities in Ghana

Tech Horizons: Empowering Panama’s Youth with AI Skills – Offer AI skill-building workshops to underrepresented youth in Panama.

Tech Hiring Pipeline Workshop – Workshop for underrepresented students in the US to help them build resumes and prepare for tech job interviews.

From Isolation to Innovation: Establishing a Computer Training Center to Empower Hinterland Communities – Establish a computer training center in an isolated Nigeria farming community and provide youth and adults with digital literacy skills.

Tech Move! Bringing Technology to all Realities – Create a portable, mobile classroom that enables computer/digital literacy classes in rural, indigenous communities in Brazil.

Project ECO-BOT – Build/distribute robots in underserved rural areas of Tunisia, focusing on women and children, and providing access to innovative educational tools.

Deep Dive into TechAble

The TechAble training initiative at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in Ghana began in February 2025 and ran for eight weeks. Aimed at supporting students with disabilities, TechAble provided mentorship and high-quality instruction.

One participant shared: “Even though I didnʼt have a laptop, I was provided with one so I didnʼt feel left out. I could participate in the exercises and get help from others in the group.ˮ

Participants in the TechAble program shared both positive and constructive feedback, highlighting the programʼs practical training, strong mentorship, and overall supportive environment.

“I liked the practical area most. It helped me understand the tools better.ˮ

As TechAble continues to evolve, our future plans are grounded in a commitment to long-term impact, sustainability, and community empowerment. These strategic directions will ensure

that the initiative grows in scope and effectiveness while maintaining its core mission: to make technology education accessible and inclusive.

The IEEE Computer Society Broadening Participation Fund supports initiatives that bring a wider range of individuals into the field of computing. Delivering varied educational and professional experiences is essential to driving technological progress and achieving high standards that serve our global community. Donate today!
