David I. Katz (MHS 71) developed many of his lifelong interests - music, sailing, telling jokes, and spending time with family - in his hometown of Marblehead, MA. While David looked upon it as just a lot of fun, the YMCAs Childrens Island Day Camp experience had a profound impact on his life. He loved to feel connected to the ocean, and with that, the weather.

David delighted in experiencing, recalling, and explaining weather phenomena, which sparked his curiosity and led him to study and work in the field of meteorology. He graduated from MIT in 1975 (Earth & Planetary Sciences) and from the University of Washington (Atmospheric Sciences) in 1978.

David was active in every community in which he lived, always conscious of the need to model social and family values. His death due to complications from Parkinsons disease is a huge loss to his family, friends, and professional colleagues.

The Scholarship Fund that has been created in his name will allow his family to bring to life a youthful side of Opa with his grandchildren. David would be so pleased to know that young people will have an opportunity to experience the YMCAs Children's Island Day Camp, a place where he learned to sail and where he first encountered the wonders of the weather and its interactions with the ocean, and which inspired his life's work and direction.
