I felt at ease because I knew that I had someone supporting me. The life I live now is very different because I don't have that thought weighing over me anymore.
Maria came to one of DCVLP’s community-based clinics after hearing about our services through an educator at her child’s school. She was concerned about the wellbeing of her son, as his biological father was abusive. Shortly after being incarcerated, the father was deported to El Salvador, and it was critical to Maria that she gain full custody of her son.
DCVLP accepted Maria’s case and quickly assigned a Spanish-speaking volunteer to represent her. Maria’s volunteer attorney worked closely with her DCVLP supervisor to ensure that the Defendant was properly served in El Salvador. At the hearing, DCVLP’s attorneys successfully negotiated a Permanent Custody Order that awarded Maria sole physical and legal custody of her son. Maria is thrilled that she finally has custody of her son and can move forward in her life with peace of mind.
