Story

RBJ College of Engineering COVID-19 Response

Lipscomb's Raymond B. Jones College of Engineering is helping medical providers stay safe by fabricating and distributing personal protective equipment including protective face shields and facemask strap ear strain relievers. This PPE is being given free of charge to area medical providers.

Production efforts have ramped up and we are able to produce around 20 face shields per hour at the low cost of around $3.50 per unit. Thus far, over 10,000 shields have been provided, free of charge. These face shields benefit medical professionals, vulnerable populations like folks in nursing homes, as well as people in our education community such as teachers and students. Your support will allow us to purchase the materials necessary to continue making more protective face shields and facemask strap ear strain relievers.

Our faculty reviewed existing proven designs and selected one developed by Georgia Tech's college of engineering. Feedback received after producing and distributing our first production lot was used to refine that design. We're using a high power, automated, laser system to cut out the components and are blessed to be able to use resources from the Peugeot Center for Engineering Support to Developing Communities to serve folks close-to-home.

At the end of June demand subsided for medical health workers as the industry producing PPE caught up with the need. Then we found a new need to produce face shields for educators. In July we received multiple inquiries from financially strapped educators and institutions needing face shields. Currently we have produced 2500 face shields for educators from Lipscomb University, Lipscomb Academy, Metro Nashville Public Schools, Hermitage Home School Group, Popular Grove Elementary Teachers, Speech Language Pathologists, and Franklin Special School District.

If you are a medical professional or educator in need of these face shields or facemask strap ear strain relievers, please complete this Face Shield Donation Request Form or contact Steve Sherman at steve.sherman@lipscomb.edu.
