Story

Move for Kids: Spring Into Action for Students

The Edmonton Public Schools Foundation is thrilled to invite you to participate in the Move for Kids Movement Challenge! This spring, we are shedding our winter layers to support over 122,000 students across 214 schools.

Whether you are a student, a parent or a community member, this is your chance to move for a cause and help remove barriers to learning.

A Legacy in Motion: Why We Move

Move for Kids honors long-standing Foundation Board Chair, Dr. Linda Miller.

For 16 years, Dr. Miller has been the cornerstone of the Edmonton Public Schools Foundation. As an occupational therapist and CEO of EWI Works International Inc., she has spent over three decades dedicated to the science of movement. As her time on the board comes to a close, we are launching Move for Kids - a movement inspired by her lifelong philosophy that physical activity is the ultimate catalyst for mental health, social connection and academic success.

"The strength of our schools depends on the strength of our community. When we all contribute and give back, we can work together to thrive." - Dr. Linda Miller

About the Challenge

Move for Kids is a community-wide challenge where you choose how to get active. This year’s theme, Spring into Action, encourages everyone to embrace the warmer weather and get outside to build a brighter future for every learner.

📅 Dates: May 4 – 29, 2026

📍 Location: Your neighborhood, your school or your local park

✨ Goal: Beyond getting active, this initiative is an opportunity for participants of all ages to raise vital funds for Edmonton’s students and learn the importance of giving back.

How It Works

Participation is as easy as a walk in the park! Follow these three simple steps to get started:

Sign Up: Register your personal or team fundraising page. (Check out this step-by-step guide to setting up your page if you need some assistance!)

Move Your Way: Commit to any activity that moves you and collect donations in support of your goals! Whether it’s a family dance party or a daily bike ride, every movement counts.

Share & Inspire: Use #MoveforKids and #SpringIntoAction on social media to show your progress and invite friends to fuel bright minds with you.

Why Your Movement Matters

Every dollar raised helps the Foundation fund essential programs that meet students where they are:

🍎 School Nutrition: Fueling focused learning through Top-ups for Tummies.

💻 Technology: Bridging the digital divide with Chromebooks for Kids.

📚 Literacy & Early Learning: Supporting Full-day Kindergarten and classroom libraries.

✨ Well-being: Funding Mental Wellness and Enrichment Experiences.

Together, we’re building brighter futures for every learner.

💡 Some ideas to get you started!

-At the Office: Take the stairs instead of the elevator or commit to 10 minutes of seated "desk yoga" daily.

-With Family: Host a "3-song dance party" every night while cooking dinner.

-In Nature: Set a goal for a daily 10-minute lunch walk or play soccer in the park.

School Activity Ideas:

-School-Wide Walks: Plan a group walk during recess or lunch hour.

-Activity Bingo: Use an Activity Tracker or Bingo Card to inspire students to try different movements.

-Events for a Cause: If you have a school dance coming up, consider donating a portion of ticket sales to Move for Kids, or organize a school-wide bike-a-thon.
