Story

At Evas Place, services are all free, available 24 hours a day and 7 days a week. All services can be accessed by Men, Women, and Children of Sanilac County. The Eva's Place Shelter provides assistance for Sanilac County Families fleeing Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault, or Homelessness.
Every dollar helps support a day at Eva's Place!
We are looking to raise $50,000.00 to provide safe shelter, and MORE!

Why is there an Evas Place?

Her name was Rebecca, she is what changed everything in Sanilac County.
She was an attractive, educated woman. Mother of two children and worked full time at a local service agency in Sandusky. Rebecca had previously been divorced and moved to the Brown City area with her son and daughter. She purchased, remodeled and renovated her house by herself and was very proud of the home she created for her kids.
Rebecca eventually met and married a man whom she thought was Prince Charming. Not long after they were married, she realized she had made a huge mistake and he was far from being a Prince! Rebecca was ashamed and embarrassed that she grossly misjudged who she married. She had put herself and her children in a situation that was aggressive, controlling and possibly dangerous. She and her husband became estranged, and she was attempting to take steps to dissolve the marriage and regain her freedom and peace. He was not going to allow her to, he was in control, and she was not.
On the night that Rebecca called 911, she explained that her estranged husband had called her and said he was on his way with a gun and was going to shoot her. Her 911 call sent the Police who stopped his vehicle close to her driveway. He indeed had a loaded gun in the car and was arrested. The Police investigation resulted in additional criminal charges, a personal protection order and steps towards a divorce.
While out of jail on bond, her estranged husband threw a cement block thru the sliding door of the home in the middle of the night. He entered with a shotgun and viciously murder Rebecca and both of her children. He then left the home and drove to a cemetery where he later shot himself committing suicide.
This was a woman that worked hard, was a loving Mother and friend to many. The tragic murder of this family rocked our community to the core. This was a harsh reality that domestic violence can happen to anyone! Horrible things can happen to good people, not just "certain" people. It was this tragedy that changed our community.

It was Rebecca and her family that prompted our community to rally together to establish a local emergency shelter program.

That program is Eva's Place.

Your gift helps us provide safe shelter, and MORE for the individuals of Sanilac County and is the reason why you should Give Where You Live.
