Story
Founded in 2021, Middlebury Formula Hybrid gives students hands-on learning opportunities in a wide range of engineering fields. In 2022, we went to the Formula Competition hosted by Dartmouth College held in May at the New Hampshire Motor Speedway. Teams from around the country bring their cars to compete in events such as acceleration (drag race), autocross (short race testing maneuverability), endurance (44km race where cars can reach over 100mph), along with static events in design and project management.
What we accomplished last year
Last year, Middlebury Formula set the ground work to make the transition form hybrid to full electric. This decision was made because we want to design and build our own car rather than rebuild Dartmouth's old broken hybrid car which is what we've worked on in past years. Electric is simpler, higher performance, and the current choice for most teams. We got a permanent home from the school, a bank account and credit card, and some new enthusiastic members. We attended the 2023 Formula Hybrid/Electric Competition to observe, talk to teams, and learn as much as we could. We are now geared up and ready to race next season.
What we're working on this year
This year we will work on deconstructing the aspects of the hybrid car we aren't using, design and implement a new accumulator, motor controller, motor, low voltage electronics, brake system, and more. The bulk of this year's work will be electrical engineering with the goal of competing in the 2024 competition. We will also spend time developing the team as a longterm organization. This club needs more members, better organizational structure, and year-to-year project management.
Our current goal
We are hoping to raise $10,000 for a new accumulator, new tools, and a motor controller. Thank you for considering a contribution to our team!
