The Rosamond Gifford Zoo is planning to increase its flamingo flock in hopes of hatching flamingo chicks in the future. While the zoo has had Chilean flamingos for many years, our flock of seven birds -- four males and three females -- are very genetically valuable and have never bred. This is likely due to their small numbers. Large numbers are important for successful breeding for two reasons; protection and strong pair bonding.

A RARE OPPORTUNITY

Bird experts at the zoo were excited to learn that another accredited zoo in the Association of Zoos & Aquariums is downsizing its flock and looking to rehome 29 birds. This offers a rare opportunity. The zoo is looking to acquire seven new individuals to double the flock size. We are hopeful that these new additions will be the incentive our birds need to breed and produce the first flamingo chicks hatched here at the zoo.

Since a flock of flamingos is called a flamboyance, zoo volunteers have launched The Fund for Flamingo Flamboyance campaign to raise funds for the acquisition and transportation of these fabulous birds.

BUT TIME IS OF THE ESSENCE! We must raise $9,000 by October 31 to seal the deal!
