Port Canaveral's scallop industry brought Dack's family to Brevard County from North Carolina where he enjoyed a wild childhood in the outer banks. Dack's father Mickey worked with Bill Lambert in Port Canaveral on automating the scallop processing machines. The scallop industry in Port Canaveral was ranked one of the top producers in the world and it afforded his family great opportunities in surfing and travel. An accomplished waterman and outdoorsman, Dack went to work on the Lady Barbara and supported his own family.
Dack understood the fishing industry's impact on his family's lifestyle and its effect on the local economy. He was proud to be a part of it. Relying on the water to provide for his family throughout his life, the decline in water quality was a traumatic loss. Dack adapted and continued raising his family to be responsible stewards of earth's vital resources and demonstrating by example how environmental health and human health are inextricably connected.
