Story
The Jim and JoAnn Hunt Scholarship Endowment honors the extraordinary legacy of Hall of Fame coach Jim Hunt and his wife, JoAnn, whose dedication helped shape Humboldt’s Track & Field and Cross Country programs into national contenders.
From 1967 to 1993, Coach Hunt built a program defined by excellence, guiding student-athletes to national prominence across NCAA divisions. His teams produced 56 All-Americans, an Olympian, and Pan American Games athletes, with Cross Country capturing a National Championship in 1980. Long before it was common, he championed opportunities for women in athletics, leaving a lasting impact on generations of athletes. Alongside him, JoAnn was the heart of the program—supporting athletes as a mentor, organizer, and steady source of care and encouragement.
Today, this endowment continues its legacy by providing critical scholarship support to deserving men’s and women’s Cross Country and Track & Field student-athletes who meet Cal Poly Humboldt and NCAA standards for good academic standing.
Your gift helps remove financial barriers so student-athletes can focus on training, competing, and succeeding in the classroom. It also ensures that Humboldt continues to attract and support talented runners, jumpers, throwers, and leaders who will carry forward the proud tradition Jim and JoAnn Hunt built.
By donating today, your impact can go even further—up to $4,000 in gifts will be matched, dollar for dollar, by alumni Earl Miller ('70, Business Administration, '71, Credential) and Dennis O'Reilly ('70 History, '72, MA History, '72, Credential), until matching funds are exhausted. Double your support for our student-athletes while the match lasts.
With your support, we can invest in the next generation of Lumberjacks—helping them chase championships, achieve their academic goals, and add their stories to Humboldt’s rich history.
Make your gift today and be part of continuing the Hunt legacy.
