The Design/Build project proposal is to design and construct a library in partnership with the community of Gia Bac, Vietnam.
The goal of the research is to use the design/build methodology to generate new knowledge about the production of high-quality, low-cost buildings. This innovative approach is developed through actual projects, which experiment with design, materials, assemblies, structure, and systems to advance knowledge about the relationship between building processes and architectural design. This project-based work has important implications for pedagogy, including the development of innovative curricula, and affects professional practice through the integration of design, materials, and construction.
The primary objective is to study and analyze the vernacular architecture of Vietnam. For example, wooden stilt houses with steep roofs have evolved to deal with the yearly flooding and heavy rainfall in parts of Vietnam. Learning from local customs will help us understand the culture we are being invited into as guests.
The second objective is to apply innovative strategies to strengthen the vernacular architectures resilience towards the intensifying conditions of climate change. We will focus on passive strategies that can be implemented cheaply and help impoverished communities that are the most at risk of climate changes effects.
The third objective is to answer the community of Gia Bacs request for a 1,000-square feet community library. The space will provide a permanent hub for education and opportunities for the local community of about 2,500 people.
