Story
Cal Poly Humboldt journalism students produce three publications: El Leñador, The Lumberjack, and Osprey magazine—and run KRFH-FM, one of only a handful of student radio stations in the nation. Students learn by doing at Humboldt, with opportunities to travel to conferences and competitions that help level up their skills.
Support for these opportunities comes from the Journalism H.E.L.P. Fund, which was established to provide students with essential equipment and to meet key departmental priorities, including memberships in journalism organizations, competitions, conferences, and travel. From cameras and audio gear to hands-on reporting experiences in the field, this fund ensures students have the tools and access needed to succeed.
This year, 26 students traveled to the Associated Collegiate Press and California College Media Association conferences in San Francisco. Students gained instruction on everything from public records requests to improving news design, strengthening social media strategies, and applying for fellowships.
Generous donor support makes it possible to send more students to events around the nation, including conferences held by Investigative Reporters and Editors, the Society for Professional Journalists, and the Society for News Design. At these events, students network with peers from across the country, find new mentors, and explore new ways of thinking about the future of journalism.
Right now, support can go even further. Gifts to the Journalism H.E.L.P. Fund will be matched dollar-for-dollar thanks to generous donors—$5,000 from Mark Larson and $2,625 from an anonymous donor—doubling the impact and expanding opportunities for students.
