Cal Poly Humboldt students enjoy an extraordinary college experience, taking small classes taught by professors who know them by name. They live and learn in one of the world's most beautiful places—near ancient redwood forests, mountains and beaches.

Story

The Cal Poly Humboldt Men's Lacrosse team has proudly represented the university as one of the two-hundred-plus teams in the Men's Collegiate Lacrosse Association (MCLA) since 1985. However, being a primarily self-funded club team in a league as large and established as the MCLA does lead to some financial challenges. The team can largely stay in the black through individual player contributions, alumni donations, and a portion of funding from the university's recreation sports department. This funding covers the team’s annual costs, including league dues, referee fees, and travel expenses; however, it is insufficient to cover the costs of replacing equipment or other one-time expenses.

Your generous donation will go a long way in ensuring a smooth operation for the team. Backstop nets, for example, are an expense that serves an important safety function by preventing bystanders from being struck by an errant ball and a cost-saving measure by reducing the number of lost balls at each game or practice. The field at the Redwood Bowl is a picturesque setting, providing a unique atmosphere for games or practices. However, due to the dense undergrowth and surrounding forest, we currently lose an average of $250 in balls each semester. Additionally, the helmets the team supplies to its players are obsolete and discontinued by the manufacturer. This poses a significant hurdle for the team as recruiting efforts prove successful and the team grows. The club's roster has doubled over the last two years, but we no longer have enough helmets to supply the new, larger roster. To comply with league bylaws, the entire team must wear matching helmets. To replace the outdated ones, we'll have to place a bulk order, which could cost the team upwards of $6,000. This is a sum that we would have to slowly set aside a small portion of the operating costs for each year until we could afford them. Your contribution will enable the team to avoid limping through the next several years, saving money and making do with broken or obsolete safety equipment.

Thank you for your consideration and support of the Humboldt Lacrosse team. We look forward to continuing to represent the university with integrity and allowing more students to discover the oldest sport in America and the fastest game on two feet.
