Story

In November 2019, Paul Morris was windsurfing near his home in Penzance, Cornwall when an accident occurred that no one saw and he cant remember. Paul was found face down in the water, almost drowned and paralysed from the shoulders down with a broken neck.

Some amazing treatment and care has resulted in Paul regaining limited use of his hands and arms but with legs that will remain paralysed. More than ready to return home to his wife Kate, his family, his dog, his corner of Cornwall his life, he cannot do so until urgent remodelling of his home to safely support his future wheelchair bound life is completed

The Cornwall Air Ambulance waiting to take Paul to hospital.

There has been amazing support shown by friends and family to help Paul over these past months, including remotely whilst he has been physically isolated from all his loved ones due to Covid concerns. Now in a care facility in Cornwall we need to get Paul the last mile to his home.

Remodelling a home quickly is a difficult task at any time and even more so in the current national context. But for Paul and Kate it is an absolute and urgent necessity doors need to be wider, access needs to be easier, ground-floor space needs to be added and much more. What many of us thought of as building an add-on is now understood to be a one-off chance to create a place where Paul and Kate can be together, move around with ease and live their lives.

And it doesn't stop there. For once he is home, Paul will then need to get out and about! While the NHS and charities provide or contribute toward some needed equipment that still leaves a lot of ground to cover. Wed all love to see Paul back on the beach one day but that requires a car adapted to get him there and in time, one he can drive. And hell need a wheelchair that can handle sand, pebbles and rocky seashores, not just the smooth aisles of Morrisons. This is Paul we are talking about after all!

A suitable home, a new set of wheels and a seat in the sand. Thats our target and we need your help to get there. A great number of people kindly supported Pauls early appeal to get the house remodelling part funded it was a great beginning and the messages many of you sent were hugely valued. We now have a clearer picture of just how much is needed to finish adapting the house will cost in the region of £60,000, a deposit for a wheelchair suitable vehicle will cost up to £10,000 and a wheelchair that ensures Paul stays as much a part of his corner of Cornwall as he ever was is another £12,000.

So we are asking for your help on a number of fronts. First, please circulate this appeal far and wide so others who know Paul or just feel inspired - can help where they can. Secondly, if you are undertaking any endeavour where you can fundraise to support Pauls recovery, please do and if not, how about setting yourself a goal and using that to help us raise funds through this page by joining the fundraising team. Third, if you know of any way to help skills, connections, supplies, support get in touch. Wed love to hear from you. And finally, it all comes down to funding if you can give or give more please do. The faster we can reach our goals the quicker Paul can get back home.

Anyone who knows Paul knows that if there was one more lap on the water to squeeze in, or one more knot to squeeze out, then Paul would be there, doing both. When the conditions are most challenging he is the first to face them down and the last to back away. Many of us know Paul in different ways he is a beloved husband, dad, son and brother. A well-liked and respected former Royal Navy officer. A talented and adventuresome windsurfer. A committed if not native Cornishman. A second career electrician. A friend, a competitor, a colleague - and for those of us watching him fly ahead of us on the waves, a real inspiration.

Thanks for helping us make sure Paul and Kate are able to build a future together.

UPDATE 30/03/21

It is fantastic to be able to report work has now begun on Paul and Kates home thanks to the kindness and support of many people who have donated money, services or labour to the project. Due to Pauls injuries he will not be able to access the upper level of his home so there is a need to build a new bedroom and bathroom facility on the ground floor. To do this there is a conservatory to demolish and a planned build to erect in its place. Last Thursday, thanks to Robin Penna (Bucklers glass) and a few friends, the conservatory at the back of the house was taken down. This paved the way for Pauls son Bradley and some friends to have a go at the concrete base with large drills and hammers so the ground works for an extension can start to be laid some time around 6 April.

Project planning has been bolstered this week by Representatives from Stroma (https://www.stroma.com) who are most generously assisting with the provision of Building Control services. A fantastic contribution, thank you very much indeed.

Another great milestone this week was that for the first time in about 9 months Kate and Paul were able spend an hour together in the hospital grounds which has helped morale no end.

With plans now approved and work starting, some big steps have been taken towards our goal of getting Paul home but there is a way to go yet, if you can support our campaign in any way please don't hesitate to contact us via the RNRMC or donate through the site.

UPDATE 11/05/21

Its been a busy few weeks for the LETS GET PAUL MORRIS HOME campaign. Nearly 700 people have now donated realising a fantastic total of £35,100 - a heartfelt thank you to everyone who has contributed, it really is helping. At Pauls house the ground works have been completed with the necessary underground pipework now dug into place by Cornwall Drains ( https://cornwalldrains.co.uk/) as shown in the pictures. Quotes for building work have been received from several companies so hopefully things will start developing in the upwards direction soon.

On April 12 Paul moved from the hospital in Hayle to a care home just outside Longrock and closer to home. Some of you may have seen his Facebook post, he can now see Marazion and the sea, get outside in his wheelchair and can be visited by his wife Kate and son Bradley on a regular basis. This move represents the last stepping stone for Paul before finally getting home, so pushing on with the work is now more important than ever.

As always, the support and help we have received is invaluable and demonstrably helping us GET PAUL MORRIS HOME, please keep sharing and helping in any way you can

Please note this campaign is a continuation of the go fund me page previously set up by Paul and his friends

UPDATE 07/06/21

Breaking news is that the UK Windsurfing Association have renamed the next UK Windsurfing Slalom event the Support Paul Morris Championship. The event is due to be held at Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy (WPNSA) over the weekend of Jun 12 and 13 Competition details are HERE With the weather expected to be fair you don't have to be a windsurfer to enjoy the spectacle of the racing and the surrounding scenery of Weymouth and Portland. Our aim is to spread the word further about Pauls story and we have been busy producing a small number of posters (picture) explaining the campaign and arranging for a donation facility nicknamed the dalek (kindly provided by the Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity) to be in place at the WPNSA.

In other news Paul is revelling in his new found freedom of being allowed more regular visits from family members and also to venture out beyond the confines of the care home where he is being looked after. More than one visit has been paid to Marazion beach, the place where Pauls journey started on that fateful day over 18 months ago.

The project team have been working hard getting quotes and generating tenders for the building contract. The bad news is that quotes across the board have been around 40% to 50% higher than original estimates due to the current situation with building materials and labour in the UK. This makes every donation and share of Pauls story vital. Some interior work to Pauls house gets underway this week whilst a preferred bidder for the main building contract has been identified and hopefully construction proper will commence in July.

A big thank you to everyone who has donated and shared so far, the campaign total has now passed a total of £35,000, close to halfway towards the £80000 target. Please continue spreading the word and if you can, donating to GET PAUL MORRIS HOME

UPDATE 05/07/21

An update wrote by Paul himself:

Hello again everyone. It's been a short while since I posted any updates on how things are going so here goes.

I am still waiting to get home but that day is getting closer with some of the building work nearing completion. We've had work carried out to make the inside of the house more open plan so I will be able to move around with a bit more ease; a couple of photos are below. This piece of work is nearly finished and then it is on to starting to build the extension. A word of thanks to my friend Phill Watt Of Watt Electrics for doing the electrical work.

The main contract for the building of the extension has been given to Mapleleaf Construction and they are due to start building on 14th of July so not long to go. The building works have been pulled together by the Royal Navy Royal Marines Charity (RNRMC) who have funded the services of a well respected project manager who has been fantastic in pushing things forward.

Also many thanks to my good friends Adrian Wallis, Nic Dodd and Gerry Northwood who continue to act in my best interests and generally be pushy in finding new opportunities to raise donations towards the build and the future. The latest fundraising opportunity was provided by the UKWA windsurfing slalom event held in Portland Harbour recently with the event being named in my honour which was fantastic. Thank you very much indeed guys

Personally, I am doing OK and it is really good to be closer to home in the Leonard Cheshire Home just up the road from Marazion and Long Rock. Im looked after well and it's great to have some visiting again. I've been down to the beach a few times at Marazion and it was good to bump into several of my good windsurfing friends again. Getting out and about really is good therapy! Physically my shoulders and arms aren't fantastic but they are certainly a lot better than they were even a few months ago and as you can guess I am always very keen to improve things as much as possible.

There are so many people who have been extremely generous in getting us this far and we really can't thank you enough. The money we raised from this Facebook Fundraiser has just about been spent now on drainage works and the internal building works but more donations were received through other fundraisers so there are still some funds left to pay a small amount of the rest of the build. Several military charities are being incredibly generous with donations but if you can, please continue to share the link to our Just Giving fundraiser which is still open; here is the linkhttps://www.justgiving.com/campaign/letsgetpaulmorrishome

Thanks to everyone who has been involved so far, you've been fantastic. Really hope to catch up with some of you in the near future.

All the best, Paul, Kate and Bradley

UPDATE 12/10/21

Good morning to our amazing band of friends family and supporters, we have got an exciting update on progress at home.

The building of the extension has been moving on at quite a pace and it won't be long until it's completed. Caley and his team of expert builders at Mapleleaf Construction have been hard at the task and look to be on target to complete the job as planned by around the 20th October. Despite the challenges they have faced from lack of materials, COVID etc. things have gone very well and our project manager, Steve Morley, has kept things moving extremely smoothly.

We had originally hoped to be able to draw on the goodwill of skilled friends to do some of the work and we had many extremely kind offers to help out. However as things have progressed, we have received some monumental support from several military charities, namely the Royal Navy & Royal Marines Charity, BLESMA and SSAFA. With their support we have been able to fully fund the project however this has meant that a single contractor was employed to do the job and it was necessary to use their usual electricians and plumbers etc. We can't thank the charities enough for what they have done for us so far and also the many offers we received from friends to help by providing their trade skills.

Unfortunately though, despite the fantastic efforts to get the building completed so I can move back home as soon as possible, this long awaited day will be delayed due to health care bureaucracy. Basically, the NHS and social services have failed to provide us with a care package in time for me to get home. The upshot is there will be a fantastic new building waiting for me to move into but I will not be able to use it until this has been decided. We do however have several experts on the case who are pushing for a solution - watch this space.

I'm still being well looked after by the staff here at St Teresa's Leonard Cheshire home near Marazion and it has been great to get out for a few visits home and also to get down to the beach to catch up with many old friends.

The usual thanks to our very capable band of friends who are helping us through all sorts of background issues, your help and loyalty is amazing.

UPDATE 26th APRIL

Hello once more, my wonderful family, friends and supporters from around the world. At last I am finally able to give you the fantastic news that I am home! 2 1/2 years on from the accident things have eventually clicked into place with care and I got back home two weeks ago. Things are certainly different but it's a new reality with new challenges which we will conquer in no time whatsoever. The alterations to the house are working out just as we had hoped for and life is definitely a lot easier with the adaptions we have been provided with. It has been a long journey to get to this point but with the patience of family, tenacity of some very good friends, several unbelievably generous military charities and the general goodwill of many individuals the journey was made a lot smoother and many obstacles have been overcome. So with a house more than fit for purpose, a vehicle to get me around and about and the warm embrace of family I am now in the position we imagined when we created the fundraisers. So now that we have achieved all the goals we originally set out, we think now is the right time to make this triumphant message the last official update on progress. As always, we thank you all from the bottom of our hearts for your love, generosity, friendship and encouragement; you have been amazing! Thank You
