On January 15th, horrific damage was inflicted upon the country of Tonga from a volcanic explosion and tsunami. The eruption is estimated at being 600 times as powerful as the nuclear bomb dropped on Hiroshima in World II, and is likely the loudest event on the planet in the past 100 years, being heard as far away as Alaska. Waves from the blast were recorded over 6000 miles away, as well as deaths in Peru directly related to the explosion. People may not realize the enormity of this disaster being so far from your home, until you realize the impact it has on the people affected at ground zero, which is Tonga. The loss of homes, clean drinking water, electricity, businesses washed away, along with the physical and emotional stress the Tongans have endured has been unbelievably traumatic. This once beautiful island in the South Pacific, which is now covered in black ash, has also been disconnected from the rest of the world due to the fiber optic cable that lies on the ocean floor, being damaged in two places.

Deaths have been reported, and as of this writing, the final death toll is unknown. Many people have been injured and many have been stranded due to the devastation.

In the past five years, Life Chiropractic College West has developed a deep relationship with the people and country of Tonga. After an initial meeting in 2017 between Dr. Oberstein and the Tongan Minister of Health, Life West has been visiting the island three times a year doing service trips and delivering free Chiropractic Care. We have adjusted close to 20,000 people, witnessed miracles, changed lives and created lifelong friendships. And now, after two years of a pandemic throttling the tourism industry, the mainstay of the Tongan economy, this disaster has literally leveled whole villages, contaminated the water, and devastated the lives of so many who we know, their loved ones and their communities.
