Story
In 1968, the Music Department could no longer justify the cost of a Marching Band. With the support of the college administration, a student-operated band known as the “Marching Lumberjacks” was conceived. What started as a practical solution quickly became a beloved Humboldt tradition. Today, the band is an energetic group that astounds crowds with its wacky marching style and extensive selection of music, entertaining audiences across the West Coast and beyond. 🎺
The Marching Lumberjacks have entertained Cal Poly Humboldt students, staff, faculty, and the surrounding community for over 55 years. More than performers, they are leaders—providing elected student officers with hands-on leadership roles, real-world experience, and valuable organizational skills. The band is open to all Humboldt students, regardless of musical background, creating a welcoming space where many have learned to play instruments for the first time while finding connection, creativity, and stress relief through music.
To keep the music alive, donations to the Marching Lumberjacks go directly toward instrument repairs, purchasing new instruments, and supporting travel to performances. Proper instrument upkeep is essential to ensure the band can continue performing at its best. Your support also helps send the Lumberjacks on the road to iconic events like the Fort Bragg Labor Day Parade and the San Francisco St. Patrick’s Day Parade.
Your support ensures the Marching Lumberjacks can continue bringing music, energy, and tradition to communities near and far. 🎶
