Story
At Cal Poly Humboldt, mathematics and data science extend far beyond the classroom. This year, students have traveled to conferences in Nebraska and the Bay Area, competed in national contests, collaborated on research, and presented original work to professional audiences. Experiences like DataFest, the Mathematical Contest in Modeling, research conferences, and faculty-mentored projects push students to apply their knowledge to real problems—and step into the role of emerging professionals.

As a polytechnic university, we believe in learning by doing. When students attend a conference, compete in a contest, or present research, they build confidence, expand their networks, and take meaningful steps toward graduate study and impactful careers. These opportunities don’t just complement coursework—they accelerate it and open doors that last long after graduation.
The Department of Mathematics and Data Science is raising funds to expand these beyond-the-classroom opportunities—supporting student travel, competitions, and hands-on research that transform theory into real-world impact. Gifts of all sizes make a difference. If just 20 people gave $100, it would generate powerful momentum for student travel, research, and competition support.
Will you make a gift today to help open more doors for our students beyond the classroom?
