Illinois Tech and the Museum of Science and Industry Partnership

The partnership between Illinois Tech and the Museum of Science and Industry (MSI) provides current students an opportunity to complete internships on one of many teams at MSI.

Illinois Institute of Technology, aka Illinois Tech, is a private, technology-focused research university. It offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in engineering, science, architecture, business, design, human sciences, applied technology, and law, where students discover create and solve.

Story

The partnership between Illinois Tech and the Museum of Science and Industry (MSI) provides current students an opportunity to complete internships on one of many teams at MSI. The students spend their summer working alongside museum curators, architects, exhibit engineers, and program specialists to develop their skills in preparation for their careers while supporting the museum and enhancing the learning experience for patrons.

With your gift, Illinois Tech can double the number of internship opportunities at MSI—from 10 to 20 cohort members—in the summer 2024. By making your gift, you also double the impact your support makes. An anonymous donor has offered to match all gifts to this internship program, up to $60,000.

“My time at MSI allowed me to really understand the tasks of an architect and the construction/design process. I saw all the nuances of architecture and how much it really takes to create a building. My supervisor was an amazing well of knowledge. He really took it upon himself to treat the internship as a “mentee and mentor” type of atmosphere.”

—Christopher Khouri (2nd Year Architecture Major)

“During my internship at MSI, I got to gain more insights about the construction industry and how exhibits are built in the museum. It was fun learning all these things, but the most valuable part of the experience was being able to meet different types of people. I got to know many kind, genuine, and smart people that I've learned a lot from and still keep in touch with today. I'm grateful for my time there and it definitely has led me to a better path in my career, especially because it also led me to gaining an internship at an engineering firm where I currently work at.”

— Pauline Punio (Co-terminal 2025, ARCE, M.S.M.A.)

“My internship led me to change my major and pursue a career path in education. Throughout my time as an educator, I was able to serve as department head of my school, create lessons that were disseminated across the Chicago Public Schools district, and help pilot nationwide curricula. I firmly believe the skills that I learned from my internship contributed to my success, and while I have moved into program management for workforce development programs in the construction industry, the skills learned through the internship continue to serve me.”

—Christina Castillo (AMAT ’16)
