Story
Healthcare in Lumbini Province, particularly in rural areas such as Lumbini Cultural Municipality, Omsatiya Rural Municipality, and Devdaha Municipality, faces significant challenges due to limited access, under-resourced facilities, and a shortage of trained healthcare professionals.
While government health posts and primary care centers provide basic services like vaccinations and maternal care, they often lack diagnostic tools, laboratory services, and specialist care, forcing patients with serious conditions to travel long distances to larger hospitals. Financial barriers and low public awareness of chronic diseases such as kidney disease, diabetes, and hypertension further complicate access to timely care. Many communities depend on outreach programs and NGOs for specialized services, making training initiatives for medical officers and nurses (such as those included in this program) essential for strengthening local healthcare capacity.
Bridge of Life will support CKD screenings to accomplish the following goals:
- Early Detection of Kidney Disease: screen approximately 1,000 individuals to identify early signs of kidney disease and other related conditions like hypertension and diabetes
- Improve Access to Care: bring free, high-quality healthcare services directly to underserved communities in Lumbini Cultural Municipality, Omsatiya Rural Municipality, and Devdaha Municipality
- Strengthen Local Capacity: train local medical officers and nurses through a focused one-day session to enhance their ability to recognize, manage, and refer patients with kidney-related conditions
- Increase Public Awareness: educate the community about the importance of kidney health, risk factors, and the benefits of early screening and intervention
- Foster Sustainable Partnerships: collaborate with the Nepal Kidney Foundation and local stakeholders to create a sustainable model for ongoing kidney health initiatives in the region
