Story
Local newspapers are a treasure trove of historical information, but anyone who has ever tried to find something using microfilm readers and digging through archives knows that it can be a slow research process. Not anymore! If enough funding is received, Cal Poly Humboldt Library’s Special Collections will digitize newspapers, make them keyword-searchable, and make them freely available online to the public.
Depending on funding, these newspaper titles are potential digitization candidates:
The Eureka Independent (1951-1958)
Humboldt Standard (1884-1928)
The Northern Californian (1858-1850)
West Coast Signal (1871-1880)
Arcata Union (1886-1928)
Ferndale Enterprise (1878-1928)
Many titles could be digitized; this list is a sample of material that can be scanned because of its copyright status. Digitization and publication will be completed with support from student employees in Special Collections. By supporting this project, you are supporting the next generation of researchers and archivists and your community by making material available to anyone searching online.
Let’s make history available to everyone! Your gift will support Cal Poly students and researchers worldwide. And maybe you can finally solve that mysterious local research question you’ve been pondering.
