Nursing shortages are a growing concern in northern Ontario’s rural and Indigenous communities. Out of 53 nursing degree programs in Canada, only 11 offer rural/remote nursing content/placements (Canadian Association for Rural and Remoter Nursing, 2020).
To address this, Fanshawe College is launching a pilot program in June 2025 partnering with the North Shore Health Network. Fanshawe’s School of Nursing are sending six second-year nursing students on a one-month immersive experience in acute, primary, and community care settings in Blind River, Ontario. By living and learning in these communities, students gain cultural understanding, develop generalist and primary care skills, and build meaningful relationships — all while addressing real healthcare needs in underserved regions.

This pilot program not only strengthens the education of future nurses but also supports local healthcare systems. The program aims to improve nursing recruitment and retention in underserved areas by fostering deep connections between students and the communities they serve. It will also build sustainable partnerships between Fanshawe College and northern healthcare agencies, creating long-term opportunities for student placements, research, and improved well-being for northern populations. This pilot experience has the potential to influence nursing education across Ontario and beyond.
