OCISO envisions Ottawa as an inclusive city in which all immigrants contribute their gifts, skills, values and culture; strengthening and transforming our community life. OCISO supports immigrants through the journey of making Canada their home by providing creative and responsive programs that are culturally and linguistically appropriate, by building community through mutual respect and partnerships, and by fostering healthy and inclusive spaces for open dialogue and healing.

Story

Run for a New Start

Supporting Newcomers. Building Belonging. One Step at a Time.

Every year, thousands of newcomers arrive in Ottawa with hope in their hearts—and uncertainty ahead.

They come seeking safety, opportunity, and a place to belong. What they often face first are unfamiliar systems, language barriers, isolation, and the weight of starting over.

Run for a New Start is OCISO’s 2026 fundraising campaign, proudly participating in the Tamarack Ottawa Race Weekend 2026, to raise funds that directly support immigrants and refugees as they build new lives in our community.

Every New Start Begins With a First Step

When Amina arrived in Canada with her two children, she carried more than suitcases. She carried unanswered questions, trauma from displacement, and the responsibility of rebuilding a life from scratch.

With the support of OCISO, Amina:

- Navigated complex settlement systems

- Enrolled her children in school

- Accessed language training

- Received employment support

- Found community, confidence, and stability

OCISO didn’t just help me settle. They helped me believe I could start again.

Today, Amina is employed, her children are thriving, and she is giving back to the community that once welcomed her.

This is the impact your steps can make.
