Story
Roy Allen is 100 years old—and on May 23, he’s about to do something no Canadian his age has ever done before: walk a 5K in an official race.
Roy doesn’t see himself as extraordinary. In fact, he simply feels grateful - grateful that he’s still able to move, to stay active, and to show up each day with purpose. But like many older adults, Roy and his wife Melba have faced challenges over the past decade that required support, guidance, and care.
When Melba’s vascular dementia began to progress, life became more complex. Decisions had to be made. New routines had to be built. And eventually, Roy and his family faced a challenging decision when he could no longer care for her at home.
That’s where the right support made all the difference.
Organizations across Ottawa stepped in at exactly the right times, in exactly the right ways:
The Council on Aging of Ottawa helped Roy and Melba navigate important life decisions through education and resources like the Smart Aging Program.
The Dementia Society brought comfort and connection into their lives - with a friendly visitor, activity kits, and even robotic companion pets that Melba loves.
Perley Health became Melba’s home in 2023, providing exceptional care and giving Roy peace of mind and the ability to continue visiting her daily and sharing meals together.
The Gloucester 50+ Centre gave Roy something just as important: community. Starting at age 98, he found friendship, belonging, and a place where people notice if he’s not there and care enough to check in.
Each of these organizations played a unique role. Together, they created a network of support that allowed Roy and Melba to navigate aging with dignity, connection, and care.
Now, Roy is stepping forward... literally.
By walking this 5K, he’s not just making history. He’s giving back to the organizations that supported him and Melba, so they can continue supporting others who are facing similar journeys.
Because aging doesn’t happen in isolation. It takes a community.
And with your support, that community can be there for more people who need it.
Join Roy. Support his walk. Help ensure that every older adult has access to the care, connection, and dignity they deserve.
Money raised will be shared equally between the four organizations noted above.
