Teen Challenge is the largest faith based addiction program with 35,000 beds globally. Founded in 1958, we have been serving this community in Brooklyn for almost 60 years. We focus on Biblical Principles and depend on years of experience to walk people to freedom. We are a little like a family, a little like a school, and a little like a boot camp. What is most important is that we are in it together. Addiction is an outward manifestation of inward issues. In a new and vibrant relationship with Jesus Christ and developing character qualities, lives are transformed, families restored, and addictions loose their power.

Story

In loving memory of

Ruth Patricia Cohen (nee Dudash)

Dec 12, 1936 Jan 8, 2023

For 86 years, Ruth Cohen exemplified selfless service, strong faith, and compassion for others. The encouragement and love she shared with her family and friends combined with her keen sense of humor and wonderful hospitality are the foundation for the deep relationships so important to her.

Ruth was born December 12, 1936 in New York and grew up in the vibrant community of the Lower East Side of N.Y. After marrying Stanley Cohen in N.Y., they moved to Brooklyn, then Valley Stream and raised three sons Bob, Gary and Glenn.

She moved to Cartersville, GA when her sons moved to Georgia and loved being closer to her grand and great grandchildren so that she could attend their activities. Her remaining few years were spent in Marietta, GA.

Ruth experienced great joy volunteering at the churches she attended over the years. The young men she mentored at Brooklyn Teen Challenge honored her with the name Mama Ruth because of her maternal nature she provided to all.

She was famous among her family and friends for her affinity for leopard print clothes and for being an avid board game player. Fishing was one of her favorite hobbies. Ruth enjoyed sharing her Ukrainian culture by making hundreds of delicious pierogis at a time.

Ruth is predeceased by her husband, Stanley Cohen, on January 31, 1997, and by her parents, Frank and Katherine Dudash, her beloved sister Grace, and niece Elaine. She is survived by her three sons and their families:

Bob and his wife Connie

Grandchildren Aaron (Coley), Lauren (Jason Shannon), Luke and Tyler

Great Grandchildren Nathan, Lily, Hunter (Aaron)
