Chajul, an indigenous Maya Ixil community that was at the heart of the 36-year civil war, has a poverty rate of 93%. Of the only 5% of youth that graduate from high school, less than 1% pass the national exams in math. The organization plans to construct and launch a girl-centered school to provide access to high-quality and empowering education for middle and high schoolers in Chajul. Through culturally responsive, rigorous, and engaging academics, graduates will become civic-minded youth, prepared for university and careers, and capable of breaking the cycle of poverty in rural Guatemala

Current teaching staff in Chajul is almost entirely male, and sexual and emotional abuse has been far too common in local schools. With plans to open a 7 classroom school building and community center starting with middle school in January 2022 and high school in 2025. Join us to create the community legacy of an indigenous, girl-focused school, creating a ripple effect of change for generations to come.
