Story
Carteret CC will create a Health Sciences Simulation Lab to simulate a hospital setting. The lab will provide current and future students with interdisciplinary training that is necessary for improved patient outcomes in the workplace. This lab will facilitate training across a multi-disciplinary suite of programs, including short-term training such as surgical technology, phlebotomy and Certified Nursing Assistant, as well as degree programs like Associate Degree Nursing, Radiography, Respiratory Therapy, Emergency Medical Science, and others. If students could learn how to work as a team to treat patients in a simulated setting, it would ease their transition from school to the workforce. The lab will consist of several simulation areas: a home, a medical office, maternal/pediatric, Emergency Room, ICU and surgical technology, computer lab and debriefing room. Carteret CC is requesting funding to purchase the remaining equipment for the facility to be fully functional.
Currently, the majority of Health Science training occurs in a silo where each discipline learns its specific skill set required for credentialing and employment. The College’s Health Science areas do conduct an annual emergency response exercise where they all work together to manage patient care. However, students need more frequent exposure to interdisciplinary activities to reinforce the dynamics of working in a team environment. The goal of the Health Sciences Simulation Lab is to teach Carteret CC students how to work in teams by learning how to effectively handle the transitions of care and the communication skills required to improve patient outcomes.
