Science Kits for Public Libraries (SKPL)
We love hearing how the SKPL program is making a difference in communities! Here’s one story we’re especially excited to share.
-Moving beyond books
At the Manitowoc Public Library in Wisconsin, Youth Services Associate Betty Schwede describes how SKPL has transformed their library:
“Because of the generous IEEE, SKPL grant, Manitowoc Public Library has transformed into a vibrant hub for science discovery and learning for all ages. Your grant has helped us move beyond books to offer engaging, hands-on science kits that spark curiosity and ignite a lifelong passion for STEM. Without the IEEE grant, Manitowoc Public Library would not be able to offer the wonderful books and supplies for science discovery and exploration for all patrons and the means to have professional, qualified presenters on scientific topics. For example, a mom with children on the Autism spectrum was excited to find out how engaging the kits are for her children. Additionally, patrons in general, are repeatedly—and pleasantly—surprised with the fabulous offerings in the science kits."
-Impact on In-house STEM programs
In-house STEM program attendance is flourishing:
-Tinker Tuesday: Forces and Motion, 27 people
-Tinker Tuesday: Creepy Human Anatomy and Slime, 13 People
-Tinker Tuesday: Cryptology and Problem Solving, 19 people
-Homeschool Hangout: Robotics, 70 people
-Benefits to the library and the community
"Especially these days, libraries need to let the community know that we are much more than books—these kits are an essential part of that mission, as well as providing support to teachers looking for resources."
"The Manitowoc Public Library and the community we serve have benefitted immensely from the addition of the science kits provided by the SKPL grant and IEEE. The kits provide resources that encourage curiosity for everyone regardless of socioeconomic status or education level.”
“Thank you for the generous funding to enhance our community in a new way.”
