At SLCSE, our 11th-grade students organize and participate in a field trip to Washington DC, where they can learn about and experience the history of our nation. For many of our students, this will be their first time traveling away from their families, but they take the healthy risk of stepping out of their comfort zones to stand on their own.
During the trip, we visit a variety of Smithsonian museums that are dedicated to American history, art, African American history and culture, the Holocaust, air and space, natural history, the American Indian tribes, and many more. We also tour the Capitol Building, the Library of Congress, and the Supreme Court, and see hundreds of monuments dedicated to people, movements, groups, conflicts, and wars.
This experience provides our students with a unique opportunity to learn about the history of our country in a way that textbooks and classrooms cannot.
