Story
Steps of Hope – Every step forward begins with support.
This May, we invite you to be part of a journey—one that begins in uncertainty but leads toward safety, healing, and new beginnings.
At Harmony House, women and children fleeing violence arrive carrying more than just a few belongings. They carry fear, courage, and the hope that life can be different. For 40 years, Ottawa’s only second-stage shelter has been walking alongside families as they take those next steps—toward stability, independence, and dignity.
I didn’t know where we would go—but I knew we couldn’t stay.
When Sara* arrived at Harmony House with her two children, she had already taken the hardest step: leaving.
What came next was the unknown.
Through transitional housing and supportive programs, Sara found more than a place to stay—she found space to breathe, to begin healing, and to rebuild her life. Her children, once withdrawn and anxious, began to laugh again, especially during after-school programs and summer camp.
“For the first time in a long time, my children feel safe.
