YNS Shark teammate, Anthony Myers, was talking to his parents this summer about how he could help other children have the opportunity to learn to swim. Anthony has been swimming since he was young and knows the importance of learning how to swim and also the joy that he experiences from being in the water. Thus was born the YMCA of the North Shore Swim Like a Shark Swim-a-Thon fundraiser.
Statistics show that an average of 3,400 people die from unintentional drowning (non-boat related) annually in the United States or about 10 deaths per day. About 1 in 5 are children 14 and younger. For every child who dies from drowning, another five receive emergency department care for nonfatal submersion injuries.
