Story

Nursing has been ranked #1 by the Gallup Poll as the most honest and ethical profession for 19 consecutive years.

Yolanda's desire to become a nurse in women's health was sparked by her mother. Yolanda states, "I smile thinking of the fact that my mother, an African-American, uninsured, high-risk patient, entered the doors of UMMC as a patient and delivered me, her 10th child." Yolanda recognizes the importance of her work, as Mississippi continues to struggle with pregnancy-related mortality rates. She strives to improve outcomes for some of Mississippi's most vulnerable patients.

Calvin started his career at UMMC as a Nursing Assistant before earning his nursing degree. He cares for patients with traumatic injuries or those requiring vascular, general, thoracic or plastic surgery. Calvin is a highly respected nurse by all who know him. He values the experience and knowledge he has gained at UMMC, something he feels can only be provided by an academic medical center.

Suzanne began her UMMC journey as a student nursing assistant in the NICU. Suzanne's passion, for over 20 years at UMMC, is caring for the tiniest and most fragile. Updates from parents of some of the NICU patients (visits or photos) are what Suzanne credits as a major reason this is the most rewarding job she could have ever imagined.

There are approximately 3,000 UMMC nurses, making up the largest segment of its workforce. This esteemed group works in research, academics, pediatrics, neonatal and adult care, administration, information technology, infection prevention, patient safety, risk management, case management, legal, quality and more. UMMC nurses make a difference in the lives of patients every day.

The Nursing Excellence & Professional Development Fund supports the retention of UMMC nurses by providing professional development, recognition and support opportunities in the form of: certification reimbursements, conference and workshop scholarships, avenues to bring in nursing experts to motivate and train staff, nurse onboarding and training enhancements, and events to recognize nurses for exemplifying excellence in patient care and leadership.

Your donation will not only support the future of nursing at UMMC, it will also play a role in creating a healthier Mississippi by focusing on high quality nursing care. Nurses touch lives 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.
