Every step you take, and every dollar raised this Race Weekend will make a meaningful impact for so many, including Rachel and Merifa.
Although they come from the same region in Malawi, Rachel and Merifa live very different lives. That's because Rachel, her family, and hundreds of others are still without clean water at home.
For Merifa, access to clean water has already transformed her life when WaterAid worked with her community to install a 30,000-litre water tank in 2021.
"We no longer have to wake up early to go draw water before school, and then come back to draw more water. So it was a very good feeling for us."
Once, like Rachel, she spent hours every day fetching unsafe water, missing school, and worrying about their family’s health. But now, thanks to the installation of a local water point, she has more time for school, her studies, and after-school choir practice.
As part of the same project, Rachel and Merifa's school got clean water. Three years on, there is more time to be at school and with friends.
“Our grades have improved. We have seen a big difference now that we have tap water near us, because we’re spending most of our time studying instead of going to draw water.”
