After the amazing success of last year's Walk for Water fundraisers to support Kona, Burkina Faso, we're excited to announce that we'll be hosting another walk in 2024! Teaming up with our long-time partners at Women Making a Difference, this walk aims to raise funds for a crucial water and sanitation project at a school in Avakpedome, located in the Volta Region of Ghana.
Highlights from the 2023 Walk for Water in Cottam
- Currently, the school uses a toilet block that is open to the community. It is in very poor shape, with the roofing sheets rusty and ripping off, causing damage to the walls and making the whole structure unstable. It has also become base for drug users at night, threatening the safety of boarding students. By joining the Walk for Water, you'll contribute to building a larger and safer sanitation block exclusively for the students.
- Many students resort to open defecation at night due to the unsafe conditions of the current facilities, heightening the risks of water related illnesses. The project will not only improve hygiene but also establish a committee to ensure the sanitation block’s maintenance and educate students on proper sanitation practices.
- The new facilities will provide dignity, especially for girls and female staff struggling to manage their periods in the current toilet block.
- Students with disabilities will be able to comfortably use the facilities, with the new block including ramps and guide rails.
