Story
The San Antonio College Empowerment Centers Women in Transition fund was initially developed in the early 1980s to assist women returning to school with their financial needs. Since then, the fund has evolved to assist both men and women through scholarships including WE Conference Scholarship. The Empowerment Center is available to work with donors to choose the specific scholarship they want their donation to be designated to. The Empowerment Centers Women in Transition Fund helps students such as Natalia Orzhekhivska, an immigrant from Ukraine who enrolled at SAC to pursue her degree in dental hygiene. Natalia came to San Antonio 10 years ago and was a stay at home mom to two boys until last year when she had to put all of her fears aside to enroll in school in order to provide a better life for herself and her children after she left an abusive marriage. Now a single mom living in transitional housing, she has a perfect 4.0 GPA, and will graduate this fall. "I want to thank you for this scholarship. It has given me a significant boost to my confidence after feeling discarded, abused and told that I was stupid for so many years. It has inspired me to proceed with my goals and work even harder."
