Why a playground?

We believe that providing an inspiring, unconventional and joyful space for playing will make a difference. We believe that playing is not a luxury but a necessity. A playground should be an integral part of the medical facilities for every kid (and every parent). A playground signals another kind of quality of space. It celebrates not only the right for life, but the right for happiness, for what it means being a child. Playground - a symbol of openness, inclusiveness, joy, sharing, learning, adventure, imagination, an active dialog between generations and cultures, and a place where creative ideas exchange. Moreover, it is the place where the future collective memories of the everyday are born. And finally, the playground is a link between every day and magic.

Why the XM Pavilion at the Tambacounda Maternity and Paediatric Hospital?

Building the new maternity and paediatric ward at Tambacounda Hospital in Senegal, was initiated by the Josef and Annie Albers Foundation along with American Friends of Le Korsa, and is designed by the architect Manuel Herz . The project is currently under construction and will open at the end of 2020. The old Hospital facilities, which were originally built to accommodate 1,000 people annually, now struggle to treat more than 47,000 patients every year. The new chapter of the Hospital is an urgent matter. Space facilities, sanitary conditions, and lack of resources are contributing to alarming maternal and infant mortality rates, a huge issue which we hope to help resolve with this new construction. We often take play for granted. However, in Senegal children simply do not have access to play facilities. There is only one playground in the entire country and the second one will be a place for children (and parents) to enjoy play during happy, but also during challenging moments, at the hospital.
