For 19 years the YMCA of Greater Houston has partnered with our community through YMCA Operation Backpack to ensure that all children start the school year with the tools they need to be successful.
Our goal for 2023 is to impact 30,000 Houston area youth with school supply kits and educate the community on what the YMCA is doing year-round to empower youth.
The YMCA nurtures the potential of every youth by providing opportunities that are more than just programs. We
are committed to providing life programming designed to better prepare youth for their future with the skills,
confidence and social awareness that is needed to thrive on their path into adulthood.
Across Harris County, 75% of low-income children with working parents live in a subsidized childcare desert,
where the availability of subsidized childcare meets less than a third of the demand. Our community needs high-quality out of school time
youth programs that offer a positive environment where all children can achieve their goals, belong to
an affirming peer group and connect with caring adults and mentors.
Before and after school hours shape the rest of a child’s life. At the Y, out of school time programs are
more than a place to go, they provide a path with a purpose. The YMCA provides safe, quality and
affordable programs at over 185 sites across Houston in over 22 school districts and charter schools.
Every $250 supports one month of a participants opportunity to have a safe place to continue to learn grow and thrive.
