Story
At Youturn, we believe every young person deserves the chance to feel safe, supported, and hopeful about their future. Each year, we walk alongside more than 425 youth aged 12–24 and their caregivers across Ottawa, Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry, Renfrew County, and Prescott-Russell. Many are navigating poverty, violence, trafficking, mental health challenges, or involvement in the justice system. Through flexible, evidence-informed services in English and French, our dedicated staff provide 24/7 support, meeting youth where they are — in their homes, schools, and communities. Using a strength-based, trauma-informed approach, we help young people build life skills, complete their education, and prepare for employment through meaningful community engagement.
The impact is real. Seventy-eight percent of youth in our justice programs reduce their risk to reoffend. Eighty-seven percent of young people leaving child welfare secure housing, employment, and/or education. More than 65 youth each year find safety and healing through our anti-human trafficking program — and with increased resources, we could support over 100. Our team answers more than 300 after-hours crisis calls annually and drives over 220,000 kilometres to ensure no young person feels alone. Your support helps us remain client-centred, community-based, and relentlessly committed to giving youth not just services — but a future filled with stability, independence, and belonging.
A story about one of our youth:
When I first received this youth on my caseload, they were a survivor of human trafficking and wouldn't leave their home for long periods of time - weeks, sometimes even months. Often, this youth wouldn't even open the door when I knocked. Through consistency, empathy, and patience we would eventually go out for walks together. Their confidence in the community grew as time went by and they began attending school and working. They have started having visits with family again after being estranged. I’m so proud of this client for overcoming fears and trauma to reconnect with their community and build a network of natural supports. They have developed amazing skills to manage their mental health and set healthy boundaries with family and friends. - Youth Counsellor Morgan Gillis
