Story
I'm thrilled to have the opportunity to be running for the Women's Prison Association (WPA) in the 2022 NYC Marathon!
At 176 years strong, WPA is the nation’s oldest organization committed to women impacted by incarceration. From working with women currently incarcerated at Rikers on reentry plans to hosting paid workforce trainings, WPA is all about empowering women to be free, safe, and independent in the face of injustice. My goal is to raise $3,500 to support the work of WPA's vital programs, including family reunification, affordable housing and meaningful employment.
As a social worker, every single one of my clients lives over the past 7 years has, in some way, been impacted by mass incarceration. I've seen the devastating effects of the trauma experienced by children separated from a parent and the ways this trauma continues to live on in the lives of adults. Running on behalf of an organization that recognizes the true cost of incarceration is an honor.
On a personal note, I'm running the NYC marathon in memory of my dad who passed away on April 13th 2021. For years, I've dreamed about running a marathon and in every little jog and training run I've done over the years, I've always envisioned that finish line. The one thing that felt clearest was seeing my dad at that finish line, cheering me on. It feels especially meaningful that this year the marathon is held on my dad's birthday. I know he'll be cheering me on.
