Story
Welcome to my Diabetes UK Million Steps profile page.
My story:
On the 10th August 2021, our family's world was turned upside-down when we received the devastating news that our fabulous, amazing, wonderful son had type 1 diabetes.
Think for a moment the simplicity of feeling hungry and having something to eat... but then having to prick you finger, wait for a blood glucose reading, work out the carbohydrate content in any snack / meal, input this into an App that works out how much insulin you need, then inject this into your leg or stomach.
EVERY SINGLE TIME YOU WANT TO EAT FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE!!
I was beyond devastated by the enormity of him having to deal with this potentially life threatening condition, for which there is no cure.
However, being the superstar he is, he has dealt with his diagnosis with immense resilience and determination. Never has he bemoaned a 'why me' attitude, he has simply taken responsibility and dealt with his diabetes every single day. He has learnt to count his carbs and manage his blood sugars, correcting when necessary and working with his amazing diabetes team at our local hospital. I am so super proud of my amazing young man, and want to support him in any way I can!
Taking on the 1,000,000 steps challenge is my small way of supporting him. I live in hope that a cure is found one day. Meanwhile, I appreciate that the advances in care for diabetes have been amazing, and that research will continue to improve outcomes for all those living with diabetes. I'm not the fittest of people (very very far from it!) - but if walking 1 million steps this summer can help raise money for research into diabetes - I'm there!
Thank you for all donations :)
