I am part of Public Counsel’s Debtor Assistance Project (“DAP”) a sub-project of the Consumer Rights and Economic Justice (“CREJ”) team. DAP aims to ensure that consumers have the necessary legal support to navigate the bankruptcy legal process, and to explore their bankruptcy and non-bankruptcy options. We manage a Bankruptcy Self-Help Desk twice a week at the Roybal Federal building in Los Angeles for the Central District of California to offer direct services and offer Chapter 7 bankruptcy workshops twice a month. Too often, a debtor in desperate financial straits is unaware of the impact a bankruptcy filing can have on their financial future, or whether bankruptcy is the appropriate remedy in their individual situation. And, debtors who are victims of creditor misconduct or fraud perpetrated by bankruptcy petition preparers often have nowhere to turn to for legal assistance.
