In 2004, Amy moved to Vero Beach in search of her birth mother. While she may have found her, she also found herself in a low season of life.
Amy decided to change careers for a fresh start. However, her new job was commission-based, and she struggled to make sales. Amy was eventually let go and she and her children ended up living in her van for a week but thankfully, they soon received assistance from local services. After exhausting those options, she and her five children slept on her grandfather's floor until finding her current rental.
The family of six now share a small apartment that still doesn’t properly address overcrowding issues.
“This whole situation has been traumatic for my children. I want stability more than anything for them,” Amy says.
Since entering the Habitat Homeownership Program, Amy has had a steady job, completed a curriculum on budgeting and the financial responsibilities of owning a home, put in approximately 200 hours of "sweat equity" in her community, and saved toward her home purchase.
Now, her dream is coming true, giving her family stability and security.
