Story
Being a part of the YMCA has been a truly life changing experience. The mission and values that are carried forward through our programming has impacted me in more ways than I know - that is why I choose to not only serve here, but also support through our Annual Campaign. Through our fundraising, the Y is committed to ensuring everyone can enjoy the Y, no matter their ability to pay. We offer a great variety of programs and activities that help people of all ages and abilities grow in spirit, mind and body, and we work to strengthen community.
According to statistics from 2017, nearly 16 million Americans have cancer. For many of us, that means we are personally affected, or we know someone who has been. Some may know that last year I was diagnosed with Lung Cancer. This was a scary season in my life, but through the support of my family and friends and an amazing healthcare provider, I was able to move forward in my journey. While my experience and recovery looks different than some - the Y is able to step in to provide support, both physical and emotional, to those navigating life after a cancer diagnosis. LIVESTRONG at the YMCA is a small-group physical activity and well-being program which meets at the YMCA twice a week for 12 weeks for 90 minutes each session. Through this program, our YMCA creates a welcoming community in which cancer survivors can improve their strength and physical fitness, diminish the severity of therapy side effects, develop supportive relationships, and improve their quality of life. This program comes at no cost to the participants, and is fully funded by the Annual Campaign.
