My life before recovery could not be more different from the life I have today. In December 2015, I was in the throes of substance use disorder. I had two small children who were so excited about Christmas and so full of joy--but all I could think about was how they would be better off without me. At that point, I didn’t even feel like I was giving the outward appearance of being okay or having it together.

On January 4, 2016, I hit my bottom and made the crucial decision to accept help. I committed to a recovery program that would transform not just my life, but my children's lives as well.

What did I learn from hitting that bottom and feeling like I was not even worthy to be a mother? I learned that things can change, and hope always exists. If you're in hot pursuit of hope, it’s in hot pursuit of you! Never give up, even if you fall, even if you are having bad days, even if you don't feel worthy. Don't give up.

Today, my purpose is to give back what was so freely given to me. I mentor women in recovery, helping them work through their programs and break free from shame, guilt, and resentment. I want them to see that sobriety is fun, and building a supportive community is crucial.

I first became involved with Nexus Family Recovery Center as a supporter through the Auxiliary. I had friends who were involved, and they invited me to lunches and events because they knew it was a cause that would resonate with me.

To me, #StrongLikeAMother means showing vulnerability and allowing my children to see my humanity. It's about creating a different family dynamic where we can be honest, human, and supportive of each other's journeys. My teenagers understand that strength isn't about hiding your feelings, but about working through them together.

My involvement with Nexus has been transformative, witnessing the incredible work they do in helping mothers and families heal from their trauma. Every family deserves that chance and your support makes the lifesaving work of Nexus possible.
