Like many I've had my own lived experience with poor mental health and mental illness. It took years to get a diagnosis, and for me to become very ill. My recovery took years to build. This should not be the norm but is all too common.
Part of that was in education and part was rediscovering my love for running.
During lockdown I was in a place where I could slowly come off medication and began my education path. I became an MHFAider and then an MHFA Instructor with MHFA England. I had found a purpose to put my experience to some good.
The reasons I'm doing this are the same as everything I take on. Firstly to show that you can not only survive, but thrive. Secondly, the same reason I run. Not to get fit but to remind myself, that I am capable and have the discipline to look after myself regularly. It's an anchor to the now. Even if I'm struggling. Staying well is a full-time job.
I've had the pleasure of meeting and hearing from so many inspirational authentic story tellers. I hope my voice helps to pay it forward.
Normalise the conversation. Be the friend you'd want. Ask the question then ask again. Check in on that person you haven't heard from in a while. We have more in common than we don't.
When you have inner peace and purpose, you can see what you're capable of. I want a future where everyone knows what help is out there, and that it's ok to grab it.
