Story
Ten years ago, I fractured my hip while training for my first marathon (with just a few weeks left to go!). I had to forgo running the race as I learned how to walk again and navigate the injury. Unfortunately, the injury happened two more times as my body overcompensated side to side. I was tentatively diagnosed (ha - don’t even get me started with the conflicting diagnoses from multiple doctors!) with Ehlers Danlos Syndrome and advised to not run again.
While in the recovery process and navigating life post-running (which felt like an identity at the time), I was supported by a wonderful group of friends and family, many of them strong women who sought to uplift me when I felt down. These women all embodied the Girl Scout spirit - strong, resilient, kind, helpful, respectful, courageous. I hope in the years since this time I’ve been able to embody some of that spirit. I thank them for their kindness and generosity and character.
All the while, I was sadly still disappointed by the idea that I’d never get to fulfill a lifelong bucket list item of running a marathon. This year…I started thinking - what if I COMPLETED a marathon? What if I walked a marathon? What if I used the Girl Scout spirit of being creative and resourceful to reach a goal?
It only makes sense that I’m training to support the Girl Scout Mission! I work at Girl Scouts and I’ve been able to firsthand see the incredible work the local councils do. I’ve seen girls come out of their shells and find their voice, I’ve seen them explore new interests in STEM and the outdoors, I’ve seen them create community change at such a young age. These are the girls that are our future leaders, your future support system, and the people that will make a huge positive impact.
I want to make a difference and keep the Girl Scout Mission going! If you’re inspired, any amount counts! I’m happy to share more and I thank you for your generosity.
