Story
This October, I will once again have the privilege of participating in Courage in Motion, a five-day cycling journey in support of Beit Halochem, an organization dedicated to rebuilding the lives of Israelis injured in the line of duty or through acts of terror.
Beit Halochem’s state-of-the-art centres in Tel Aviv, Haifa, Jerusalem, Be’er Sheva and Ashdod provide members with the specialized rehabilitation and ongoing support they need to reclaim their independence. Through physiotherapy, hydrotherapy, adaptive equipment, sports coaching and cultural programs, these centres help disabled veterans and victims of terror rebuild not only their physical strength, but also their confidence, sense of community and quality of life.
Cycling has become one of Beit Halochem’s most popular programs. Customized handcycles, tandem bicycles and other adaptive equipment allow those who have lost the use of their limbs or their eyesight to experience the freedom, camaraderie and sheer enjoyment of being outdoors.
From October 11–15, I will ride between 80 and 120 kilometres each day, including some demanding climbs. While the physical challenge will be considerable, it pales in comparison to what Beit Halochem’s members confront every day.
The ride was originally scheduled to take place in northern Israel. However, because of the continuing unrest in the region, it has once again been moved to the south. That same uncertainty has significantly reduced the number of international cyclists participating this year, making our fundraising efforts more important than ever. The money we raise will help sponsor approximately 100 disabled veterans to ride alongside us, purchase specialized cycling equipment and support the vital programs offered through Beit Halochem’s centres.
It is never lost on me that I, and so many others around the world, have the privilege of living in relative peace because of the sacrifices made by those who have defended Israel.
Riding alongside these remarkable people, both young and old, is profoundly humbling. They share their stories not in search of sympathy, but with courage, humour and an extraordinary determination to live as fully and independently as possible and to enjoy many of the simple pleasures the rest of us can too easily take for granted.
It is truly an honour to ride beside them.
May I count on your support? If so, please use the link below to sponsor my ride. Every contribution, regardless of size, will help make a meaningful difference in the lives of those who have already sacrificed so much.
